Women: Do you fear fitness?

From bulky bodies to knobby knees, there are a ton of fitness fears that can keep women out of the gym. It's time to let go of the excuses - it turn out most of these myths aren't really true.

Phew! With all the warning and old wives' tales about working out, it's a wonder that any of us ever make it to the gym. But it doesn't take much research to find out that these cautionary tales. Read on to learn the truth about some of your most fabled fears.

WILL THE STAIR CLIMBER MAKE MY BUTT BIG?
By using machine correctly, we can avoid bulking up. If you use the stairs on a heavy resistance and slow pace it will have a tendency to build muscle, but if you keep the resistancel light and the steps quick you will get a workout that's more about stamina and tone.

IF I USE HEAVYWEIGHTS AND DO LOW REPS WILL MY ARMS BULK UP?
Most women don't tend toward big bulky muscles - they think they do, but they don't. They don't have the muscle capacity. If you're not sure you're doing the right weight or the right amount of reps, suggestion of doing 15 repetitions with a weight that challenges you. By the las rep, your muscles should feel like they've been worked but not overly strained.

IF I DO HIGH INTENSITY WORKOUT WILL I BURN FAT?
People have this idea that there's a fat burning zone when you go really slow and you do a long workout. They think that because you burn a higher percentage of fat that this is better for weight loss. "This isn't true." A workout that burns the most calories is going to be the most effective way to lose weight. A high intensity workout is actually very effective if you want to drop some pounds. You may burn more calories over a shorter period of time, even though you'll burn a lower percentage of fat, you'll burn more fat overall. All this doesn't mean you need to do a high intensity workout everyday. Twice a week is plenty, even if you're trying to shrink your waistline.

IF I WORKOUT AND THEN STOP, WILL MY MUSCLE TURN INTO FAT?
It seems to make sense - if we build muscle and then stop working out, wouldn't fat appear where the muscle once was? Not necessarily. " Fat and muscle are two different types of cells - one doesn't turn into another one. The reason people gain weight when they stop working out is because they don't burn as much fat."

5. WILL RUNNING ON THE TREADMILL RUIN MY KNEES?
"No." Running is a fantastic exercise since it doesn't require lots of skill, and other than buying a pair of running shoes, it is very inexpensive and can be done anywhere. In fact, treadmills can be better for you than running on your own street. Commercial grade treadmills (those found in the gyms) are excellent for running because the impact suface is made to absorb a lot of impact tha twould normally go into the knees if you just ran on the street.

IF I DO SIT-UPS INCORRECTLY, COULD I ACTUALLY DEVELOP A POOCH?
For most women, achieving a flat stomach is like scoring a date with Brad Pitt - a lofty dream. We got so fustrated we start wondering if we're actually doing something to provoke this pesky pooch. So are we doomed to dread our midsection for life? Well, not if you're willing to work on it. The muscle fibers in the abdomen are designed to work long hours everyday since they are postural muscles. These muscles react differently than other muscles in the body in relation to exercise and growth. Muscle fibers like those in the legs will grow stronger they are stressed by exercise. " You're more likely to develop a pooch from overloading the desserts, not the sit-ups."

WILL SPIN CLASS MAKE MY LEGS GET BIGGER?
It's another "fear of getting bigger" question, and it's a really common one. Some women are convinced that after weeks of spinning, their pants don't fit. Are they just imagining this? "Typically, activities like cycling (either spinning indoors or riding outdoors) are endurance activities and do not build big muscles." As a result of prolonged use and burning lots of calories, the legs may appear to be more muscular and therefore look bigger, but they are likely to be the same size.

IF I EAT BEFORE I WORKOUT COULD I GET A CRAMP?
You know you get grumpy when you don't eat, and a grumpy exerciser isn't likely to work very hard. So if you want to slim down and save your sanity, grab a snack before you workout. Not sure what to eat? That depends on the type of exercise being performed. If you want to avoid cramping, keep your snacks limited to no more than 250 calories and predominantly made of carbohydrates, like a small whole wheat bread or a banana.

Try it now - Yoga

It's still the perfect way to get strong, slim and centered even after 5,000 years.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT:
* Your Body Weight Provides All The Resistance you need to strengthen and sculpt from head to toe
* It's The Perfect Way To Cross-Train because it stretches tight muscles, increases range of motion,
enhances balance and improves alignment.
* It's Good For Your Body and Mind: Yoga boosts energy and calms you as it teaches awareness, focus
patience.

HOW IT WORK
The ideal yoga workout incorporates six types of poses, says Roger Cole, Ph.D., a psychophysiologist and yoga instructor. Together, they improve alignment, strength, flexibility and relaxation. Standing poses build strength and stamina. Balancing poses improve balance, of course, but also promote focus. Forward bends stretch back and hamstring muscles; back bends improve breathing. Twists aid in digestion and tone abs. And inversions increase circulation, leaving you calm yet energized.
Try this program designed for each group with one pose, do exercise in order given
1. WARRIOR II (standing pose) 2. TREE (balancing pose) 3. DOWNWARD DOG(partial inversion)
4. WIDE LEGGED FORWARD FOLD (forward bend) 5. BRIDGE POSE (back bend)
6. SEATED SPINAL TWIST (twist)

THE MIND/BODY CONNECTION
>> Yoga's physical, emotional and mental benefits are inextricably linked. Stretches help to release pent-up tensions, while strength-building poses boost body confidence. Plus, holding a pose for a minute or more improves your focus and gives you the opportunity for spiritual insight. So while you may not walk out of yoga class with the wisdom of a swami, at least you'll be more tune with yourself.

FIND YOUR YOGA STYLE
>> Ashtanga or Iyengar? Hatha or Hot? With little knowledge, it's easy to determined the practice that's right for you.

HATHA
Best For BEGINNERS
Although it's the umbrella term for all physical yoga practices, it is often used as a name for begginers' classes that include basic poses, breath work and meditation

BIKRAM
Best for WORKING UP A SWEAT
A series of 26 poses practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees to increase flexibility.

VINSAYA
Best for RAISING YOUR HEART RATE
This steady stream of flowing movements coordinated with the breath doesn't stop until final resting pose.

IYENGAR
Best For PERFECTING YOUR FORM
This practice emphasizes precise alignment and develops strength and flexibility.

ASHTANGA
Best For SCULPTING YOUR UPPER BODY
A standardized sequence of athletic poses that connects movements with the breath.

RESTORATIVE
Best For BUSTING STRESS
Props such as bolsters and blankets support your body so you can totally relax.

Power Stretch @ ALL FIT

Definition of Power Stretch
The poses you will start with are a series of Sun salutations, which warm up the body; the sweatier you get during a class, the better. The heat you generate helps loosen the muscles and joints, both preventing injury and making it easier to perform the various poses. As you start to get hotter, you'll launch into a sequence of standing postures. These may range from fundamentals such as the Triangle to much more difficult poses requiring considerable balance. If you can't perfectly perform particular Power Stretch postures, the teacher can modify them to match your level of practice and experience.
You should try and keep your pace rhythmic and consistent, with your gaze and concentration unwavering. Once you complete the standing postures, your body will be sufficiently warm and loose to perform the sequenced moves that are specific to each series. While these sets of postures do constitute a thorough workout within themselves, they nevertheless have a particular focus. The 30+ postures in the first series focus mainly on forward bends, while the second series predominantly consists of deep backward bends, postures involving putting the feet behind the head and seven variations of the Headstand posture.
To maintain high levels of body heat during the session, you transit from one pose to the next by doing partial Sun Salutations. These may include lifting yourself up on your hands and swinging your legs back to go from a sitting position to a 'push-up' pose(more applicable to intermediate or advance), lunging from one pose to the next or even using the Plank pose for transition between postures.
Benefits of Power Stretch
Stretch is undoubtedly excellent for increasing flexibility, but one of the great power stretch benefits is that this style also gives you a workout in the more traditional sense.
In this way, it is somewhat different to the more static styles of stretches. Whilst they develop flexibility and improve overall body composition, they don't help with cardiovascular training and endurance, and unless you consciously choose to use more 'power yoga' postures, they don't necessarily develop great muscular strength.
On the other hand, the benefits of power stretch include the ability to become strong and muscular in a relatively short space of time.
Certain poses in stretch, called the 'power poses' for this reason, help train muscles. And power stretch has a lot of them incorporated in its' routines. For example, the sun salutation sequences, which start each of the series, strengthen the deltoids, triceps and pectoral muscles.
A further benefit of power stretch training is that you won't build bulky muscles. However, you do develop an increase in the size and density of muscle fibers. This has a positive effect on both strength and endurance - good hallmarks of a rounded physical fitness program.
The very nature of the way the power stretch series were designed mean that they satisfy the caveats every stretch practice should if your aim is also to be physically fit in the traditional sense. The constant movement, and the pace mean you build up a sweat and get a cardiovascular workout. This is an intensity you control, however, and easing up on the pace means less of a workout for your heart.
Power Stretch benefits extend beyond traditional fitness, however. The combination of the heat generated with the stretching allows the muscles to soften. You can thus go deeper into a stretch than you would be able to otherwise. The heat is also said to have a cleansing effect of the body. It certainly helps with circulation, and many of the poses also help with metabolism. The focus and breathing help develop concentration and coordination as well.
It is easy to see why ashtanga is so popular, especially amongst those who want a more vigorous and traditional workout with the unique benefits that stretch can bring. To get real fitness benefits, however, you need to be doing 3 to 5 sessions per week each lasting 1 hour. The power stretch series take about that long to do. Just remember to hold each position for 5 or 6 breaths, no more, so you don't lose the dynamism and heat generated.

Running & Jogging - Health & Benefits

Jogging or running is a popular form of physical activity. Running is an appealing exercise because it doesn't cost a lot to take part and you can run at any time that suits you. Some runners choose to participate in fun runs, athletics races or marathons.

Health benefits
Regular running or jogging offers many health benefits:
  • Help to build strong bones, as it is a weight bearing exercise
  • Strengthen muscles
  • Improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Burn plenty of kilojoules
  • Help maintain a healthy weight.
Running versus jogging
The difference between running and jogging is intensity. Running is faster, uses more kilojoules and demands more effort from the heart, lungs and muscles than jogging. Running requires a higher level of overall fitness than jogging.

Both running and jogging are forms of aerobic exercise. Aerobic means 'with oxygen' – the term 'aerobic exercise' means any physical activity that produces energy by combining oxygen with blood glucose or body fat.

Goal setting
Think about what you want to achieve from running or jogging. Issues to consider may include:

  • Getting fit – beginner you should start with brisk walking, progress to jogging and work up to running. This should take a few months.
  • General fitness – mix your running with other forms of exercise (such as swimming or team sports) to maximise your overall fitness.
  • Weight loss – adjust your diet to include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, wholegrain cereals and low fat dairy products. Cut back on dietary fats, takeaway foods, soft drinks and sugar.
  • Companionship – you could run with a friend or join a local running club.

Getting started
Some general tips for beginners:
  • See your doctor for a check-up before you start a running program. This is especially important if you are over 40 years, are overweight, have a chronic illness or haven't exercised in a long time.
  • Start with brisk walking. Aim for 30 minutes per session. Allow a minimum of six weeks to build up to regular running. Aim to increase your jogging time each session, and alternate between walking and jogging.
  • Ensure you warm up and stretch thoroughly before you head out. Cool your body down with light stretches when you return.
  • Ensure you have plenty of fluids and take a water bottle with you on your run. Try to drink plenty of water before, during and after any activity.
  • Allow at least two complete rest days per week to avoid overtraining, which may cause injury. Consider other low impact activities, such as swimming, at least once each week.
  • Plan your route. If possible, choose flat, grassy areas rather than hard or loose (such as sandy) surfaces to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Avoid running near roads. This is especially important if you have a pre-existing condition such as asthma. Vehicle exhaust fumes can increase your risk of various cardiovascular and respiratory complaints or illnesses.
  • Avoid the 'peak hour' periods to reduce your risk of inhaling air pollution from motor vehicles. If possible, schedule your runs for either the early morning or the evening.
  • Wear loose cotton clothing. Dress your upper body in layers of clothing so that you can take off layers as required.
  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to exposed skin areas.
  • Buy an appropriate pair of shoes.
Choose your shoes wisely
Issues to consider when choosing running shoes include:
  • Don't wear your old sneakers. Poorly fitted shoes are a common cause of injuries.
  • The running shoe should bend easily, feel comfortable and have a wedge of shock-absorbing material in the heel.
  • The fit should not be too snug. Your foot will splay as it impacts with the ground.
  • When buying the shoes, wear the socks you intend to wear while running.
  • Have your shoes professionally fitted.
Health and safety suggestions
Suggestions include:
  • Make sure you eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
  • Avoid eating directly before going for a run.
  • Avoid running during the hottest part of the day in summer.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after your run.
  • Take your mobile phone with you.
  • Wear reflective materials if you're running in the early morning or at night.
  • Tell someone where you plan to run and when you think you'll be back.
  • If you injure yourself while running, stop immediately. Seek medical advice.
Things to remember
  • Both running and jogging are forms of aerobic exercise.
  • A beginner to exercise should start with brisk walking, progress to jogging and work up to running.
  • See your doctor for a check-up before starting a running program.

Skin Fitness - Warning for health problems

Skin is an organ itself (your body's largest in terms of both weight and surface area), skin protects against invasive bacteria, regulates body temperature and picks up information from the stimulation of touch, pressure, pain, heat and cold. Little wonder, then, that when there's something wrong with you on the inside, your skin sometimes sends up the first warning flare.

Yellowish skin, orange palms and

The cartoonish skin hues of carotenemia can be the unfunny result of an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which causes increased levels of beta-carotene in the blood. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant, found in fruits and vegetables, that normally gets processed by the thyroid. When there's a thyroid problem, the gland doesn't metabolize the vitamins as quickly, so beta-carotene accumulates. You can also get Technicolor skin due to beta-carotene buildup thanks to a diet heavy on carrots, carrot juice, sweet potatoes and squash.

The skin of someone with hypothyroidism also tends to be dry and cold, and sometimes more pale than yellowed. Feeling tired, sluggish, weak or achy are the main symptoms, along with possible unexplained weight gain. Women over 50 most often develop hypothyroidism.

Carotenemia caused by a skewed diet isn't serious and resolves itself when a broader range of foods is consumed. Hypothyroidism, however, is a medical condition that can lead to such complications as heart problems, so a combination of skin changes plus fatigue warrants attention from a doctor.

Breaking out in hives in the sun

Being allergic to the sun is pretty rare (although this kind of immune system response can happen in some people). A more likely explanation for going outside on a sunny day and coming back with an itchy rash that looks like hives or eczema is having taken a photosensitizing drug. A chemical in the medication causes changes that increase the person's sensitivity to light.

The rash is limited to sun-exposed areas, including the forearms, the neck and, less commonly, the face. It can feel worse and last longer than a sunburn. It doesn't matter whether you're fair-skinned or dark-skinned; anyone can have a photoreaction. One of the most common drug culprits: thiazide diuretics (Hydrodiuril, Dyazide), which are a first-line treatment for hypertension. Other meds that can produce this effect include antihistamines, tetracycline, the antiaging and antiacne drug tretinoin and tricyclic antidepressants. Two different people can react quite differently to the same drug. Or you may have no reaction one time but a severe reaction later.

Check the labels of your prescription medications. Look for phrases such as "May cause chemical photosensitivity." Use a high-SPF sunscreen or sunblock but know that this may not prevent the rash; the best advice is to wear sunglasses and a broad-rimmed hat, cover the skin and limit sun exposure. Tell your doctor, too; a switch in medicines may prevent further rashes.

Long dark lines in the palm

A palm-reading mystic might have her own interpretation, but to a physician, a deepening of the pigment in the creases of the palms or soles is a symptom of adrenal insufficiency, an endocrine disorder.

Hyperpigmentation may also be visible around other skin folds, scars, lips and pressure points (knees, knuckles). Addison's sufferers have low blood pressure, which falls further when the person stands. Salt loss can lead to a craving for salty food. The disease affects men and women equally but is found most commonly between ages 30 and 50.

Large, dusky blue leg veins

Some of your veins are no longer working properly when you spy ropy, blue-to-purple lines snaking up your legs. Venous disease (varicose veins) can be a mere cosmetic annoyance or can cause pain, cramping and difficulty walking. Veins rely on one way valves, like shutters, to keep blood circulating; when they stop working, blood leaks back into the vein and pools there.

Varicose veins are sometimes mistaken for spider veins, a weblike network of smaller blue or red veins closer to the skin's surface. Varicose veins tend to be larger, darker and sometimes raised, with a twisted appearance. Half of all people over age 50 have varicose veins, especially women. They often first appear in pregnancy.

Exercise, compression stockings and avoiding constricting postures (like crossing your legs when seated) can help ease discomfort, but they won't make varicose veins disappear. Not all faulty veins cause problems. However, if the veins cause pain or become warm and tender to the touch, tell your doctor. Severe venous insufficiency can lead to dangerous blood clots. Treatments with good success rates include sclerotherapy (injecting a solution to shut the vein) and surgery—also options if you just can't bear how your legs look at the beach.

Brownish spots on the shins

The fronts of the legs along the shins tend to bang and bump into things a lot. For someone with diabetes, the damage to the capillaries and small blood vessels that are characteristic of the disease will cause them to leak when traumatized, leading to brown discoloration known as diabetic dermopathy.

The brownish patches may also be rough, almost scaly and tend to form ovals or circles. They don't hurt. Another common skin change of diabetes to look for: An open, unhealed sore on the foot. Diabetics lose the perception of pain, temperature and touch on their feet, making them unlikely to notice common foot blisters, which then go untreated and may become infected..

Persistent rash that you want to scratch raw

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) clusters of small, ferociously itchy blisters that show up repeatedly in the forearms near the elbows, the knees, the buttocks, the back or the face or scalp are a hallmark of celiac disease, or an allergy to gluten. As many as one in four people with celiac disease have DH.

The rash appears on both sides of the body. Itching and burning are so intense you can hardly quit scratching. People with DH don't usually have the digestive symptoms of celiac disease, but they're intolerant of gluten just the same. DH often shows up between ages 30 and 40, and most often in people of northern European heritage.

Report the rashes to your doctor who specializes in skin disorders to evaluate and rule out other causes. Blood tests and a biopsy of tissue from the small intestine are used to diagnose DH. A gluten-free diet for life is usually advised to keep symptoms at bay; this includes banishing foods, beverages and medications that contain wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats. Drugs may help control the rashes.

Purple stains or splotches

Looks a bit like a bruise, is often mistaken for a bruise, but tends to hang around longer because it's not exactly a bruise. Purpura or leaking blood vessels under the skin. It has several possible causes, ranging from a bleeding disorder to scurvy (vitamin C deficiency). But in adults over age 65, in whom it's common, the main explanation is thin skin, often made even more fragile by years of sun damage and weakened blood vessels. Then the condition is known by the unfortunate name of senile purpura.

Excessive intake of aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, vitamin E or ginkgo biloba, which older adults often take to boost memory, can worsen the condition. So can blood thinners, such as coumadin, alcohol and steroids.

A classic bruise tends to turn black and blue following an injury. With purpura, in contrast, there doesn't need to be any trauma; the discoloration starts as red and turns purple, persisting longer than a bruise before fading or remaining brownish. The purple skin doesn't blanch (fade or lose color) when you press it. Purpura can cover large patches of skin or show up as small purple speckles called petechiae. No matter what the size, the purple areas are most common on the forearms, legs and backs of the hands.

Persistent bruises should always be evaluated by a doctor, as should someone who seems to bruise easily. It's important to rule out underlying causes such as a bleeding disorder.

Intense itchiness without a rash

Feeling itchy in more than one specific spot can have many causes, but when there's no accompanying visible skin change, it may be pruritis, one of the first symptoms of lymphoma (cancer of the lymph system). Hodgkin itch (the two main types of lymphoma being Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma).

The itchiness is more intense than that caused by ordinary dry skin. It can be felt generally or, most commonly, in the lower legs. Less often, the skin also looks reddish and inflamed. Another common symptom of both Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, collarbone or groin. (Note that lymph nodes can swell because of common infections as well.)

Pallor, especially with blue-tinged nails

Severe anemia, a blood disorder, can show up as pasty, paler-than-usual skin on the face and palms. Anemia can be the result of iron deficiency, chronic blood loss from bowel disease or ulcer disease, among other reasons. Iron-deficient anemia is sometimes seen in people over age 70, who may no longer prepare nutritious meals or have interest in eating them because of depression or other health problems.

Pale complexion, the pallor of anemia tends to affect the usually-reddish tissues of the mouth, gums and lips, too. Look for nail beds to be very pale, almost bluish. Other symptoms include being quick to tire, headaches, dizziness and shortness of breath.

Consult a nutritionist or doctor. Over-the-counter or prescription iron supplements usually correct anemia caused by a nutritional deficiency. It helps to eat more iron-rich foods (red meat, egg yolks, dark leafy green vegetables, dried fruit), especially in tandem with vitamin C (as in orange juice) for best iron absorption. Cooking in an iron skillet adds iron, too.

Tingling skin followed by a rash on only one side of the face or body

An often painful condition called shingles (herpes zoster) announces itself in this distinctive way. Shingles is caused by the same virus that gives people chicken pox. In eight out of 10 people who get chicken pox, the virus retreats to the body's sensory nerves and stays there. But stress, infection, certain medications (such as those used in chemotherapy and after transplants) or an aging immune system can reactivate the virus years later, producing shingles.

A burning sensation and sensitivity to touch often precede the shingles rash by days or weeks. (Or, in some lucky people, the pain may be mild.) The rash itself first looks like raised red bumps, not unlike chicken pox, appearing in a band or strip on the trunk, legs, face, neck—but only on the left or the right side. Within a few days, the bumps turn into fluid-filled pustules, which crust over a week to 10 days later.

Seek medical helps as soon as you feel the pain, if you suspect you're in a high-risk group. Starting antiviral medication within 72 hours of the rash's appearance can reduce the severity of the disease and lower your odds of developing a complication called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). In PHN, the searing pain of shingles can continue for weeks, months or even years. People older than age 70 are most likely to develop PHN, but anyone can.

Today Meditation:
There's a huge difference in our lives during prosperous times and difficult times. In the difficult times, our problems tend to give us a purpose, something to struggle against, something that challenges our creativity and our ability to persevere. Human beings tend to rise naturally to a challenge, and that fact helps us to make the most of the bad times. Adversity helps us to reach down deep and pull from resources that we simply never would have known are there if we hadn't been forced to access them by our situations.

In prosperous times, though, we have to create our own motivation. There's very little that we have to do in order to survive--our survival is a given, save for the possibilities of accidents or illness. And many people simply aren't able to motivate themselves, or even to find challenges in areas that are appropriate for them to pursue. In trying times, we have a purpose of survival, yet in times of plenty we have to define our purposes ourselves. And those people who aren't able to do so, unfortunately, tend to lead purposeless lives, moving from thing to thing for no particular reason other than they can't think of anything else to do. And this is often where drugs and alcohol and so many other problems come in.

In trying times, we band together to help each other out. In times of prosperity, we stay by ourselves, and whether we realize it or not, we miss the deep connections with our fellow human beings.

I don't want simply to survive prosperity. I want to appreciate the gift of prosperity and thrive in it, making the most of my life. I want always to have a purpose, or two or three, to keep me going. And I know that no one else can define that purpose for me or approve of it--it's all up to me if I want to survive prosperity.

Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.

Spinning (Indoor Cycling) for Fat Burning

Anatomy of Spinning Classes

Spinning or Power Pacing is an indoor cycling class led by trained instructors. Workouts are conducted on specially designed stationary bikes that feature a weighted flywheel, a front wheel, plus adjustable seats and handlebars. Spin-type bikes also come equipped with a gear knob, which allows you to modify the intensity of your workout.
Spinning classes typically consist of 15 to 20 people and last about 60 minutes. In addition to the bikes, another key component of spinning classes is music. Many gyms have special spinning rooms which feature disco lights and loud music. However, don’t let the party-like environment fool you; spinning classes offer intense workouts designed to benefit you both physically and mentally.

The Many Benefits of Spinning

If you are not convinced that spinning is right for you, consider the following benefits:

Burns Fat

Dozens of medical studies have been conducted to research the benefits of spinning. During the course of one study, experts found that the average spinner can increase his or her heart rate to 80 percent, which is considered “excellent” when it comes to burning fat. This is especially significant given that the majority of fat burning occurs when a person’s heart rate is at approximately 65 to 75 percent of maximum capacity. Many gyms equip their spinning bikes with heart rate monitors so riders can check their pace and adjust their cycling habits to optimize fat burning. In addition to reducing fat, spinning is also a great way to burn calories. By participating in a 60-minute spinning class, you have the potential to burn upwards of 1,200 calories.

Increases Leg Strength

Cycling utilizes the body’s largest muscle groups: glutes, quadriceps and hamstrings. By participating in a spinning class, you are able to target the aforementioned muscle groups and improve blood flow to each. In addition, spinning helps tone your calf muscles and strengthens your tendons, which improves overall leg strength.

Aids Cardiovascular System

Spinning is an ideal exercise to improve your cardiovascular system. Your heart and lungs make up your cardiovascular system, and the fitter you become, the more efficiently they work. Consistent cycling improves blood flow throughout your body and increases the speed by which oxygen is distributed. Over time, spinning will help improve heart and lung performance and increase your overall fitness level.

Improves Posture

In addition to improving your cardiovascular system, spinning also encourages the use of stabilizer muscles found in your trunk, hips and shoulders. Improvement of these muscles helps to enhance body alignment and posture.

Reduces Risk of Injury

Spinning is considered a non-load bearing exercise, which means your body does not have to bear the burden of supporting all your weight throughout your workout. Since the majority of spinning exercises are done while sitting, the pressure is taken off your joints and you reduce your risk of injury. This is something that is not accomplished when participating in other cardio activities such as running.

Miscellaneous Benefits

Other benefits of spinning include:
  • Not having to worry about poor weather conditions
  • Not having to purchase expensive workout equipment
  • Having an instructor on hand to provide extra motivation
  • Learning in a group environment
  • Controlling your own aerobic output

Ways to Maximize Spinning Benefits

To maximize the benefits achieved by spinning, consider these five tips:
  1. Adjust your bike according to your height. Set the saddle to your hip level to ensure your knees are not bent or locked straight when peddling.
  2. Choose proper fitting shoes. Experts recommend stiff-soled fitness shoes rather than soft running sneakers. If you find that you enjoy spinning, you might consider investing in special cycling shoes that clip on to the bike’s pedals.
  3. Bring a bottle of water. It’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water to class and take frequent drinks while you ride. Spinning offers a high intensity workout and most participants sweat profusely during class. Having water on hand will help you remain hydrated.
  4. Bring a towel. You will need it to wipe sweat from your body and the bike handles during your workout.
  5. Don’t force yourself. Don't get caught up in the excitement of the class and ride beyond your fitness level. Doing so may cause painful injuries.

Yoga - Put Away PMS

Put Away PMS
A solution to send your monthly symptoms packing

Just when nothing could be more annoying than having someone tell you to do something else, we're gonna do it. When you're suffering from the irrational mood swings, undeserved bloating, torturous cramps, and nagging junk food cravings known collectively as PMS, better to hit the mat than the vending machine for relief. Ideally, do a few round of sun salutation to get your body warm up, couple of back bends to boost your mood, some gentle twists to beat bloating and a few soothing seated popses before a nice long savasana.

Bow pose (Dhanurasana)
Combat cramps and upset stomach with backbends, which mgets the spinal fluid moving and relieves compression in the vertebrae.

Begin by lying face down, arms at your side and chin on the floor. Reach back and grab your outer ankles, palm facing in. Breath in, pushing your hip bones down into the floor and kicking yojur legs back and up, which pull your arms back and lift your chest. Keep your head up in line with your spine (don't arch your neck) and hug your knees toward each other. Hold for 5 breaths, then release and return to the starting position, repeat 1 more set.

Yoga vs Pilates

What are the differences between Yoga and Pilates? Another famous question that my practitioners always asked me.

A lot of people getting confused with the terms of Yoga and Pilates. On the surface, Yoga and Pilates are two very similar forms of exercise. Both involve a series of postures designed to strengthen the body and the mind.

As commonly known by the publics,Yoga were originally developed in India. The word, ‘yoga’ ,derived from a Sanskrit word meaning union, the union of the body, mind and soul.

Pilates,on the other hand, was developed by Joseph Pilates during World War I as a method of exercise to help paralyzed soldiers.Pilates emphasized the connection between the body and the mind.

Yoga utilizes a varieties of asanas(postures) designed to bring body and mind into harmony.Besides physical exercise,Yoga also focuses on breathing and meditation, designed to bring the flow of energy through the body into alignment.Yoga can be treated as a form of exercise or a way of finding inner peace in oneself.

Pilates,on the other hand, focuses more on the physical aspects. Its main goals are to strengthen the abdominal muscles, improve posture, building up stamina and stabilize the spine. In other words,it helps to make the body longer and leaner. It was famous with its effect of toning up bodies.

Many people believe that Pilates is focused on how one looks, whereas Yoga is about how one feels.

What's the different between a West Malaysian and an East Malaysian?

I'm not playing "Spot the differences" here. Just a frustration I had being a West Malaysian who planned to settle down in the East.

Many of us who had visited Sabah will know that we are only allowed to stay for a maximum of three months. If we over-stayed, an approval to leave from the Immigration Department will be needed or else, we will be stop at the Kastam.

How about for those who had been married to the locals here or those who wanted to stay for long term? Being born and stayed in KL for the past 22 years, I had been educated that Malaysia is a country consisting of two geographical regions which is the West Malaysia and East Malaysia. However, looking at some of my practitioners who had been married to the locals here for more than ten years but still holding a permit to stay which have to be re-new every year had created doubtness in me.( Have I gone to another country out of Malaysia? They had been married here and some of their kids is even older than me. Holy craps!!)

I had been warned by them to pass my stuff to an agent in order to apply for the permit as I will be seeing some f***ing bitch's faces who will never approve my application if I go by myself. Ignoring the warning, few months ago, I went to apply the f***ing permit with my boyfriend. True enough, I wasn't successful as I met a ugly-fugly bitch who said, "Ini Malaysia punya, mesti check dengan teliti." ( What the fish? How about those Filipinos who were applying for the work permit at the same department? Am I an illegal immigrant? I felt than I'm worse than an illegal immigrant. F***). After all the hooh-hah she created, finally she rejected my application with an excuse that my documents were not complete. I was truly annoyed by her attitude as all my documents had been checked by her colleague before I was entitled to get a number for queing.

My stays in KK will soon be over-due, again I've to dig out all the relevant documents to apply for the f***ing yearly permit. After the lesson I had been thought, I will rather pay some money for the agent to settle up all the hassles.

P.S:For your information, those who were married to the bumiputera in Sabah can save all the hassles applying for the permit. This is the easiest way, you should think about it! Don't worry, Sabahan is not staying at the tree, they stay in a concreted jungle.

Things You Shouldn't Wear In a Yoga Class!!

Guy: What attire should I wear when I go for your class?

Me: Anything that is stretchable but no loose short pants.

Guy: WHY?

Me: Erm...You know, sometimes, when you do certain pose, especially balancing pose like
Warrior
III, you don't want me to see something that I shouldn't see, right? You get what
I mean?

Guy: Haha...Alright!! You experienced before? How did you react?

Me: Yup.How can I react? Pretending that I can't see and walkaway without adjusting.

So GUYs, next time if you are wearing loose short pants and you found me adjusting everyone but not you, you know what happen.

Girl: Why can't I wear loose T-shirt? Why should I wear body hugging tops? It's too
revealing.

Me: Do you know what happen when you bend your body? You are revealing your body.

What I
mean here including your bra, your tummy or your cleavage.

A loose T-shirt is more revealing or a small T-shirt/ body hugging tops is more revealing? I think you know the answer better than me.

Oopss.. I never meant body hugging tops is a tiny sport bra, okay? Yup, I do wear sport bra once in a while but not a tiny sport bra because I don't have a big boobs. I had a story to tell here. I know my ethics but this is just a warning from my experiences.

Once upon a time (I'm not that old, what I mean is few years back) in one of my class, a petite girl with a big boobs attended my class. She was pretty, fit and was wearing a tiny sport bra. She was quite an eyes candies for most people, especially for guys. During the lying down poses, her tiny sport bra were too small for her, it gone up a little and she revealed her boobs. She never noticed it and continued until the end of the class. It was lucky enough as I'm a normal girl who doesn't put much attention on her leaks and the guys were at one corner at the back.

Wondering what if I'm a normal guy... or I'm a guy practitioner who was just next to her... Hmmm... I think I would be losing my focus to the class... most probably 'sinful' thoughts will happen.

Relationship between Chinese Language and the Bible

Questions started playing in my mind as I sat down quietly in a cafe enjoying my free times. I do think a lot and sometimes its seems to be stupid. As I browsed through an email and found a link, I was shocked to found someone out there had a query and an answer for my silly thoughts.

Have a look here; http://students.washington.edu/cbsf/cool/Chinese.swf

For your information, I'm a Buddhist who believed in only ONE GOD. However, because of accompanying my partner, I had got myself going to church and reading bible. Couldn't be denied that all the stories in the bible do make senses to me, but I did had some thoughts (which I assumed as silly). I wondered whether we are all praying and believing in the same God. I wondered whether we are all getting confuses because of the different languages and cultures.

"So the Lord scattered them from all over the earth. That it is why it was called Babel - because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth." (From Genesis 11:1.9)

What do you think after looking into the link?

Hmmm... no offences here... maybe is just a coincidence.. maybe is true... I'm not from Chinese education but I had an interest to learn Chinese words as it seems to be quite appealing to me.. Whatever it is, I still believed in God and respect all religions...

Life...

"Life is like a story book...

Each journey of life is like a new chapter of the story...

It's contained a beginning, middle, climax and a conclusion...

Every mixtures of the ups and downs in life provide a significant lesson to us..."

Again, I'm starting a new phases of life, a new chapter in my own story book...

I don't know where I'm heading to...

But for sure, it will be wonderful and yet an exciting journey...

Chinese New Year 2009

Chinese New Year holiday gone with the wind as soon as Monday comes, what left was just a beautiful memory in our heart. After a year of ups and downs, finally a family re-union and spend some precious times together.

It had been 3 years since the last time I celebrated Chinese New Year in KL. Everything seems so fresh and warm. From my memories, as Chinese New Year came by, KL will turned out to be a quiet town, it was true when people said 'things changes as times passes by'. I was truly surprised to see a happening town in KL this year.

Meeting my beloved mother, sister, brother and my doggy was the most precious moment during Chinese New Year. As we grew up older, finding times for each other seems to be getting harder and harder. Its been quite some times since I felt the fun and warmness in my family after I left KL. (Thank God for giving me such a loving and caring family members.)

A busy week in KL never seems to be enough for all of us. Spending most of our times together, eating from KL-Taiping-Penang, visiting relatives, watching movie, singing karaoke, chit-chatting and hanging out together had failed to make us feeling exhausted. In facts, it makes us appreciated each other more. Never do I realized that I was so lucky to had a great brother and sister.

After a great holiday to recharged ourselves, it is times to get back to work again. In this bad economy situation, may all of us work hard together to overcome it. Good luck to my beloved brother and sister!!
